FROM THE NORTH WITH AMBITION

I lived in Canada at some point. While working at Loblaws in South Keys,Ottawa,I made time to visit the countryside often.It impressed me more than the city. A friend at Weagant Farm in Winchester sold me an old Massey Ferguson. I shipped it to Mombasa en route to my village. I had no idea how this would end ! But I trusted in God, that one time out of the cold,snowy north winters,I would be a farmer back home.Mini or mega.So here I'am. The journey just begun.

INSPIRED BY A FRIEND

When Brown was invited to a friend's housewarming party at his upcountry home in 2005, seeing the development, he knew what he wanted. A beautiful house at his Khwisero home. And indeed 3 years later his dream came true. This is what his rural home looks like.

HUNGER IN THE STOMACH - NOT ME

James Mwinjiro Asumwa of INZALA MUNDA FISH FARM ( hunger in the stomach !) at Ematende Village,Marama Eshitari Sublocation is a polygamist and a grandfather of many. They all live on his compound but have never been without a meal.His fish farm has catfish and tilapia, not that he feeds on that daily but the proceeds of his sweat have earned him a posho mill and a dairy cow called 'Tilapia'! He is a happy man. You can see it on his face. And the gradchildren too.

GGA-NBO. In air travel lingua, that is how our flight from Kakamega to Nairobi is described. A term that has arrived courtesy of the neo-rural trend. Now you can catch a scheduled flight Nairobi-Kakamega or the other way. In these photos we caught up with some passengers waiting at 'terminal' to board the fly540 beechcraft. It touches down and off to the skies headed to Nairobi. How times change. Someone say AMEN !

This house is situated on the dusty/muddy Bukura-Butere road. Our poor rural roads did not discourage the owner, a Nairobi architect, from contributing to changing our upcountry landscape. We want Vision 2030 to embrace all.

MALLS, MALLS, MALLS - Bye to Dukawallas

It started with malls in Europe, Canada , America and South Africa. Came the 90s and we started seeing them in other African cities like Nairobi. And now, even rural towns like Kakamega are donning malls. We can't wait for the electric trains.

Modest but a good statement of himself. Milton works 800kms away in Garissa, northern Kenya but is always happy to turn up home to this welcoming upcountry house in Western Kenya whenever he has a free week-end.
